Two years before the Civil War pits brother-against-brother, German-born fugitive hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award-winner Christoph Waltz) arrives in America determined to capture the outlaw Brittle brothers dead or alive. In the midst of his search, Dr. Schultz crosses paths with Django (Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx), a freed slave and skilled tracker who seeks to rescue his beloved wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from ruthless plantation owner Calvin Candie (Academy Award-nominee Leonardo DiCaprio). Once Django has aided Dr. Schultz in coral ling the Brittle brothers, the two team up to capture some of the most wanted men in the South. Meanwhile, Django never loses sight of his mission to free Broomhilda from the treacherous slave trade before it's too late. Upon arriving at Candie's nefarious plantation, dubbed Candyland, Django and Dr. Schultz discover that slaves are being groomed for gladiator-like competitions by Candie's malevolent right-hand man Billy Crash (Walton Goggins), and together they skillfully work their way onto the compound for a closer look. But just as Django and his partner locate Broomhilda and plot a daring escape, Candie's house slave Stephen (Academy Award-nominee Samuel L. Jackson) catches wind of their plan, and informs his master of the betrayal. Now, as a clandestine organization attempts to back them into a corner, Django and Dr. Schultz will have to come out with pistols blazing if they ever hope to free Broomhilda from Candyland and the clutches of its vile proprietor

Django unchained release date. Django unchained film locations. I'm not usually a fan of dark humour; but this movie had me genuinely entertained throughout. The protagonists were both lovable and dangerous, and the plot was both action-packed and heartwarming.
The exceptional cast all do a terrific job of bringing truly multidimensional characters to life in a way that is incredibly bad-ass, yet also engagingly emotional.
It's truly impressive to have such strong, emotional characters in such an exciting action-packed movie, but Quentin Tarantino really nailed it, even if the run time is closer to three hours than it is to two.
It has all the stereotypes of both a Tarantino film and a classic Western, and not in a tacky way; but in a self-aware way. Everything is deliberate: the lines, the camera work, and the action.
All this is maintained while tackling one of the most dark and sober topics filmmakers have tackled thus far. And yet; it's still enjoyable to watch.
The movie could've easily been a depressing look at slavery in the United States, but Jamie Foxx, and Christoph Waltz especially, bring a welcome surprise of comedy.
The blood and gore was without a doubt over the top, and while the run time didn't detract from the enjoyable experience; it is a long movie.
But I am nonetheless impressed at the way Tarantino has made a movie about an incredibly dark subject matter while somehow maintaining epic action scenes, cleverly-written comedy, and an emotional quest that could inspire fairy tales.

Jackson has the most memorable performances, as they portrayed characters that are very different from their previous roles in their filmography. Christoph Waltz plays the most likable character, as if it was Taratino's gift to repay him, after Waltz played the evil villain from his Oscar winning performance as a Nazi from "Inglorious Basterds.
Overall it's a good movie, but it pales in comparison to his 1994 film "Pulp Fiction. 2009's "Inglorious Basterds. There are definitely a few brilliant scenes in this movie, but not as many as Taratino's better films, as it also drags with a running time of just under 3 hours.
